The Batalha Monastery, also known as Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitoria, is considered one of the most beautiful examples of Portuguese and European architecture, dating from the 14th century. A remarkable gothic Monument, which exists due to a promise made by King John I, if he was victorious during the battle of Aljubarrota, a battle fought on August 14, 1385, he would build the Monastery. This important victory guaranteed him the throne and the independence of Portugal. The Batalha Monastery was classified World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1983.
